 Biography

Jamaal As-Salaam is first a poet, then a playwright, an actor, a director, producer, photographer, art designer videographer, art director, and writer.

He has lived the past 10 years in Denver, and nowlives in Los Angeles.

His efforts are well documented and his accomplishments are recognized.

His poem “Conjecture” was awarded the Editor’s Choice in the National Poetry Anthology of 1996.

Jamaal’s poem “Colliding Concrete and Steele” is included in World Healers 2002 dedicated to the events of 9/11/2001. 

After moving to Colorado, Jamaal has produced a chapbook widely available he calls “One Eyed Dogs”.

His banner company Lightland Publishing Company is his publisher. He also created Ghost Wind Design Studio.
 
 Black Love edited by Dr, Francis Barnes published his poem “Mieko” dedicated to his oldest daughter in 1999.

Jamaal was listed in Who’s Who among Black Playwrights in 1984, and is listed in Marquis’s Who’s Who in the World/America. He is also recognized in Swarthmore’s Who’s Who 2004 and IBC’s 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 20th & 21st Century. 

He is a outstanding person whose talents stretch across several artistic and professional disciplines. Such poets as Amiri Baraka, Quincy Troupe, Ntozake Shange, Simeon Ortiz, and many others have tutored him. He has slammed and read his poetry for audiences in Taos, New York City, Denver, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. In 1998 he achieved his Microsoft Certified Professional Certification after 15 years in the profession. And he is currently striving to achieve a Bachelor’s from Art Institute of California-Hollywood.
